Carmelo Oquendo, Chief Copy Editor

Now known as the Chief Copy Editor for the Bear Truth News, sophomore Carmelo Oquendo is ready to kick off his year with writing. When asked why he joined the newspaper, Oquendo explained that he had always had a passion for being a fantasy author while growing up. While the class doesn’t involve many of the fantasy elements in their writings he is still able to scratch the itch by writing about his favorite movies, shows, and sometimes books. Carmelo enjoys a variety of hobbies during his free time away from school, including boxing and chorus. High school is just the start for Oquendo, after he graduates he has big plans. Although he is still currently undecided, Oquendo has his heart set on his dream school, Southeastern University majoring in either law or acting.

Oquendo is lucky in love, as he considers his girlfriend, Jasmyne to be his best friend, too. He also stated that he has a ton of great friends that he trusts.Writing is one of his greatest talents, and he writes about a diverse range of topics for The Bear Truth news, including movies, TV shows, and anything related to entertainment.

The Oquendo family’s dog. Blaze, although old age, is still adored and beloved by her large family. One of Oquendo’s favorite people to look up to is pastor and speaker Peter Reeves who is well known around the Christian community. Oquendo’s faith inspires his music tastes as he enjoys listening to Christian pop and choir music. One of his favorite songs is “Praises” by elevation worship. When watching TV, he enjoys shows like Wednesday, Alice in Borderland, and his favorite Marvel movie Black Panther.

When asked about all of the experiences that have brought him to this point, Oquendo reflected that last year entering high school as a freshman was difficult, however over the course of his first year, he started to enjoy and even love high school. Finally, Oquendo leaves some words of encouragement for people reading, that “We shouldn’t leave aside our dreams or passions, but instead we should be following our dreams and learn what we need so we can do anything we want, and in the end we will be truly happy with what we do.”
