In late March of 2026, Brazilian football player, Jorghino, ignited a wave of discourse surrounding Chappell Roan after alleging that Roan’s security guard confronted his 11-year old stepdaughter at a restaurant. Jorginho’s claims went viral and people online began to offer their opinions on the situation. The child’s mother Catherine Harding also took to instagram to share that her daughter did nothing but walk past the table. This quickly turned into a debate on Chappell’s attitude towards her fans with critics having drastic opinions.
At face value, this situation seems to just be about the parent and the inappropriate interaction involving his child. The focus however, shifted to focus on examining Chappell as a person. The security guard, Pascal Duvier, took responsibility himself and said he acted on his own judgement. Roan made an instagram story addressing the situation stating that she never saw the family and was not aware of this situation. There is no reliable evidence that Chappell Roan personally caused this incident to take place.
The majority of the backlash she is facing has been brewing for quite some time. She is notorious for confronting impatient paparazzi and fans who she feels intrude her privacy. Just recently, for Paris Fashion Week 2026, a clip of Roan went viral where she began filming a fan and paparazzi who were following her around while she was trying to enjoy her dinner. This clip was one of the many instances that people online used to call out what they felt was ungrateful behavior. Many feel her celebrity status accompanies the obligation to interact with fans as they gave her the platform.
This conservation online extends to a bigger issue with parasocial fans. Often in culture celebrities are expected to uphold a gracious demeanor to their fans. This relatability is what often draws in fans to keep coming back. Chappell actively speaking out about how she truly feels is jarring where celebrities are expected to present a strong face even when they disagree with what is going on. While Chappell can come off as cold and distant, she is not trying to emulate something she is not. Instead, Chappell is deliberately telling the world how she wants to be treated.
