On March 31, 2025, Senator Cory Booker had begun his first few hours of his 25 hour speech, ending on April 1, 2025, becoming the center of attention on the senate floor besides Trump. This long, record breaking speech led him to beat the original record breaker Senator Strom Thurmond’s 24 hour and 18 minute speech. Filibuster speeches are long, topic filled speeches that are incorporated into various different topics, as well as being relevant to the current topic they are speaking about.
In Sen. Booker’s speech however, unlike during Thurmond’s speech, Booker had decided to stop eating the Friday before, and dehydrate himself the night before in order not to use the restroom, as well as not allowing himself to sit down to take a break during the day long speech so nobody would have to take his place momentarily. He said this in an interview after being questioned, saying it had many benefits, as well as downsides like cramps throughout most of the speech, also stating that the reason he was able to stand for so long was due to him emptying his pockets before the speech.
Senator Booker also went on to speak about the current president’s view on the disabled, specifically including those with Parkinson’s like Booker’s father, Cary Booker. Senator Booker went on to explain the lasting effects of the disease, saying that the president, as well as multi-billionaire Elon Musk had driven fear into those with different diseases and were not ‘financially stabilized’ as he read excerpts from people around the world, fearing the state and stability of the economy and the government.
