The US has now officially left the World Health Organization after Trump signed executive order 14155 in January of 2025 and the required one year notice period finished. Trump had originally planned to leave the WHO in his first Presidential term in 202 but the decision was overturned by the Biden administration.
Trump had originally called for this withdrawal in 2020 with his decision after citing concerns over the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and what his administration had called an unfair burden on US taxpayers. The decision was later overturned by former US president Joe Biden and his administration but after Trump retook office in 2024 he signed the executive order to leave in January of 2025 which has now officially been completed.
Supporters of this move say the US can seek for global health efforts through partnerships and independent institutions such as the Central of Disease Control and Prevention. Critics such as public health experts say that leaving the WHO could weaken internal disease control and reduce US influence on global decisions regarding disease.
The withdrawal has raised concerns internationally as the US was one of the WHO’s biggest financial contributors.
