The release of Silent Hill F brings another addition to the Silent Hill franchise. Released September 25th, of 2025, Silent Hill F takes a new approach on the series through setting and new mechanics offering a modern take on the Silent Hill franchise.
Unlike most of the games in the Silent Hill series, this game takes place in 1960s rural Japan in a small town called Ebisugaoka. The main character, Shimizu Hinako, is a high school student whose town is taken over by monsters and a mysterious red fungus. The game is written by Ryukishi07 who already has experience with themes such as emotional trauma, fear and social pressure after writing and creating Higurashi When They Cry that dives into similar themes which he implements into this story.
Gameplay, like most Silent Hill games, mixes puzzle solving with combat with this game especially leaning into the combat with new mechanics such as a stamina bar and a “Soulslike” inspired combat system featuring counter attacks, a stamina bar and timed dodges not seen in any other Silent Hill game before. The soundtrack is composed by long-time Silent Hill veteran Akira Yamaoka. Critics have praised the atmosphere and story, calling it one of the most memorable horror experiences of the year.
Fans are left divided after the combat additions with some calling it awkward and difficult while others enjoy the increase of difficulty. Even so, Silent Hill F has sold over a million copies since launch and is receiving praise for bringing a new story and energy to the franchise.
With its focus on psychological story telling, Silent Hill F redefines what the series can be. It stands as a bold step into a new creative direction.
