On January seventh, of 2026, a civilian known as Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Officers (ICE). With the recent administration’s crackdown on immigration, ICE raids have been rampant in the country. ICE operations were sent to a Minneapolis neighborhood, and community members gathered to protest, Good among them. She was shot by an officer who thought she was going to attack them as she attempted to drive away.
Good was a 37-year-old who had moved to Minneapolis recently to start a new life. She had three kids, and was newly married to her wife Rebecca Good. Her friends and family describe her as warm and loving. When describing her life, her mother shared with The Minnesota Star Tribune, “She was incredibly warm with her peers, generous with their work, and was just a bright and engaging presence that made folks feel good.” Her passion for community and kindness led her to participating in protests against ICE.
Her tragic end has brought attention to the countless violent incidents that have affected numerous individuals. People online and in the community were deeply enraged and disheartened at the actions taken by ICE. Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, argued that Good was attacking agents as they were driving their vehicles away. However, after several videos of this incident surfaced online, people began to speculate that this was not the case. These new angles show Good attempting to drive away from the agent, instead of into him. Many believe that this was another act of rash violence committed by ICE. In the days after her passing, increasing numbers of people in Minneapolis and beyond have banded together, demanding justice for Renee Good.
These ongoing protests bring to light the aggressive tactics utilized by the government to find and deport undocumented immigrants. Raids often take place in schools, hospitals or courthouses where people are at their most vulnerable. Laws have enabled these agents to arrest their suspects through profiling and with the use of an administrative warrant. In their effort to protect the country, ICE raids have hurt thousands of citizens and individuals living in America.
