The sci-fi television series Supernatural, which followed brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they fought various demonic and supernatural forces, was a huge success, running for 15 seasons before it ended on November 19, 2020. Fans of the show had their curiosity piqued by the recent announcement of a prequel spinoff titled The Winchesters, which will follow Sam and Dean’s parents John and Mary. As reported by the official synopsis, the prequel is “the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

In the past, the team behind Supernatural tried to release two other spinoffs, Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, but both efforts were unsuccessful, as neither made it past the pilot stage. Bloodlines was a commercial failure, while Wayward Sisters, though well-received by the fanbase, was never picked up by the CW network. However, both the crew behind the series and the fanbase believe that The Winchesters, unlike the other spinoffs, will prove successful, as episodes that involved a deeper look into Sam and Dean’s parents proved highly popular.According to the American entertainment website Screen Rant, “One major draw for fans is the involvement of [Jensen] Ackles, who will reprise his role as Dean Winchester by becoming the show’s narrator. The Winchesters is also written and executive produced by Robbie Thompson, former co-executive producer of Supernatural.” In terms of the cast, Screen Rant reported that “Drake Rodger (The In Between) and Meg Donnelly (American Housewife) have landed the roles of young John and Mary. … [Nida] Kurshid will play Latika Desai, who is a young aspiring hunter, while [Jojo] Fleites is set to play Carlos Cervantez, an optimistic experienced demon fighter.”

Although The Winchesters is still in its infant stage and does not have a set premiere, it is already generating great buzz among the Supernatural fanbase. Not only will the prequel bring back the beloved franchise and people involved in it, Screen Rant reports that it could provide “answers to a plethora of unanswered questions that would fill in the blanks in canon.”
