On February 8th at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California Super Bowl 60 will commence. World renowned but controversial band Green Day will be doing the Super Bowl opening show. Also Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny doing the halftime show. Green Day was formed in 1987 then created two albums, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk in 1990 and 1991, but didn’t really blow up until their 1994 album Dookie, which put them on the map. After Dookie came out, the rest was history: Green Day since 1994 has won five Grammys while being nominated 20 times, many MTV Video Music Awards, and multiple Billboard Music Awards.
The reason Green Day is known for being so controversial is mainly because of their American Idiot album and its cut-throat meaning. The 2004 American Idiot album is a scathing critique of George Bush and the Republican Government’s actions during the tragedy of 9/11 and Iraq war. Green Day sang about the propaganda and paranoia spread by the government and the media; they also talk about the “mindless redneck patriotism,” making fun of those who blindly support and follow the government without care.
Green Day has had a lot of controversy around them due to their political outrage toward the government, calling them fascists and idiots live on stage. They have also changed their lyrics in the middle of their 2025 Saviours Tour during the song “American Idiot” targeting “MAGA” and Republicans instead of the regular lyrics. Green Day have openly talked about some of the songs we will definitely see during their opening performance. Those songs include
“Basket Case,” “Brain Stew,” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Some other songs that have been speculated are “Good Riddance,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday,” and “When I Come Around.”
