Lauren Freeman is an ELA teacher at Winter Springs High School, and the adviser for the Newspaper program. She teaches freshman honors English classes, and is involved with many programs and clubs. This year, she leads the English Honor Society and the Journalism Honor Society. This is her second year leading the Newspaper.
A Florida State graduate who majored in English and childhood development, Freeman is an avid reader and loves a wide range of genres. Some of her favorites include mystery and horror, fantasy (such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Narnia), as well as Regency era pieces, like Wuthering Heights. One of her favorite activities is curling up with a cheesy mystery novel during the fall or winter months.
Aside from books, she also enjoys indie pop and singer-songwriter style music, like Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom, and Regina Spektor. Her love for stories also infiltrates her music taste; she enjoys Taylor Swift’s folklore album for its powerful storytelling and lyricism. Freeman also enjoys true crime television, supernatural horror movies, and period pieces.
This year, Ms. Freeman is looking forward to a multitude of fun activities in school. She finds joy in lesson planning with the Professional Learning Community (PLC), and tends to focus on creating interactive lessons that are more fun and “out of the box.” In Newspaper, she is excited to see her students grow, and create a new focus on the website and media aspect of the program.
In her personal life, she can often be found antiquing or visiting weird thrift stores, buying new books, and trying new restaurants. Recently, she has been attending church with her boyfriend, and has even found a renewal in her faith. After growing up in a less religious environment, creating that new connection caused a “paradigm shift” and changed her perspective of the world, which she now applies to all other areas of her life.
Freeman cannot wait to see where this new school year takes both her career and the Newspaper itself. She is excited to see how the program grows, and how her students improve.
