Golden Globes: The Good and the Bad

Nicole Rumman, Entertainment Editor

The Golden Globe Awards is the ideal event to bring together the magic of film and the convenience of television into one award show. Before the program is, of course, the anticipated red carpet arrivals; where celebrities can show off their gowns and tuxedos while having copious amounts of photographers capture their every move. While showing off their attire, it is only expected that social media and entertainment T.V. shows will rate their choice of apparel.

First up is the best dressed. Out of all of the women, Gina Rodriguez, Eva Longoria and Natalie Dormer, rocked the red carpet and set the standards for the other nominees.

Gina Rodriguez wore a gorgeous navy blue princess gown by Zac Posen. Not only did it look amazing in photos, with her slicked back hair, and beautiful jewelry, it wowed the crowd.

Eva Longoria also stunned the crowd with her Georges Hobeika dress that had beautiful rose applique on each side to perfectly complement her curves. The white color also went perfectly with her tan skin tone and her new ruby and diamond engagement ring went perfectly with the red on the roses. Her hair was nice and simple in a low up-do to complement the intricate embroidery of the dress.

Last but certainly not least out of the best dressed women was Natalie Dormer, the star of the just released horror film – The Forest¬ – and she also played Cressida in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. She wore a lovely “red carpet red” floor length dress with a built in black necklace and slouched sleeves. Not only did this dress amazingly complement her skin tone, but it also went beautifully with her blonde hair that was in a messy ponytail.

Onto the best dressed men: Leonardo DiCaprio definitely was one of the most sophisticated dressed in his well-tailored and classic tuxedo. To go along with his clean look, his hair was slicked back into its usual style.

John Krasinski looked classy with the same style like DiCaprio- well-cut, clean and simple tuxedo. Him and Leonardo DiCaprio also added to the trend of well-groomed beards on the red carpet this year.

Along with DiCaprio and Krasinski, Michael B. Jordan looked polished on the red carpet, his addition of a vest pulled the look together, and made him stand out in the crowd.

With a list of best dressed celebrities, comes the worst dressed as well. Whether it is high fashion, or not, most can agree on the bad choices these celebrities made when choosing their attire.

First up out of the women is Regina King, nominated for her performance as a supporting actress in a series in “American Crime,” she definitely will not receive a nomination for best dressed. Her dress has been compared to many things such as, a fish, or the actual Golden Globe. Not only did the gold “scales” clash with the flash from the cameras, but the cape just catapulted her onto the worst-dressed list.

Next is Kate Hudson. She wore a pale pink, salmon-ish color that not only clashed with her skin tone but with her blonde hair as well. Her attire, which does not deserve to be called a dress, was topped off with a choker necklace that was the same exact fabric as her crop top and skirt.

Among the worst dressed actresses, Rooney Mara reigned supreme in a salmon dress that washed out her skin tone.

Rooney Mara, who was nominated for her performance in “Carol,” wore a dress in the same color as Hudson that washed out her skin tone, but her dark brown hair and defined eyebrows helped save the look a little bit. Her raggedy dress that featured strips of pom-poms may be considered high fashion, but for most it was a disaster. If she was nominated for her performance in Pirates of the Caribbean, it would be the ideal dress.

Out of the worst dressed men, Dwayne Johnson, Wiz Khalifa, and Paul Dano had failed attempts at unconventional tuxedos.

Johnson wore a red velvet tuxedo that was definitely not tailored properly because it made him look bigger than he already is.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was not on his fashion game that night, wearing a maroon velvet suit that fell short in comparison to his colleagues attire.

Wiz Khalifa, wore a blue floral tie with cropped pants and loafers with no socks. It may be high fashion, but was definitely not black tie attire for an award show.

Lastly, Paul Dano wore a navy ensemble that made him look like a manager on a cruise ship, especially with the six buttons.

All in all, celebrities have the connections and money to purchase any dress they please. Some celebrities make the wrong decisions while some make incredibly right decisions and choose stunning dresses so that once they reach the red carpet, they are surrounded by journalists and photographers. Despite whatever these celebrities wear, their performances in their movies and T.V. shows were amazing.
