On September 28, 2025, the NFL officially announced its Super Bowl 60 Halftime Show performer, that being Latin American artist Bad Bunny. This move divided many as some believed that the Super Bowl should be only performed by an American, and an English-speaking artist. This mindset is weird considering Bad Bunny performed at Super Bowl 54 as a guest singer with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, who are both Colombian. This is also ignoring the fact that he is Puerto Rican, and has always been an American citizen. The idea of hating on someone for “not being American” while there have been so many performers who were actually born outside of the U.S like The Weeknd (Canadian), Rihanna (Barbados), and Coldplay (United Kingdom). It all just feels like performative outrage since the minute someone who is mainly a Latin American artist gets announced as the lead for the biggest show on the calendar, that’s when people get mad, and ignore the other international artists. Over the next few months, he continued to become even more popular, especially with his album DeBI TiRAR MaS FOToS, which was released in January last year.
Leading up to the 2026 Grammys, Bunny was nominated for six awards, including Album of the Year and Best Record with DtMF, his lead single off the album. Ultimately, Bad Bunny would take home three Grammys, for best Global Music Performance, best Música Urbana Album, and Album of the Year. Bunny’s Album of the Year win made him the first ever Latino artist to ever win the award at the Grammys. However, what made headlines was his speech after winning the award for best Música Urbana Album, where he said: “Before I give thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out. We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans”. This speech caused division amongst both sides of the political spectrum as the topic of ICE is extremely touchy for many, being the cause of many disputes in our nation’s current politics.
A week later, Bad Bunny performed at Super Bowl LX, and performed a range of songs from beginning with Tití Me Preguntó to a salsa version of Die With a Smile with Lady Gaga, to “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii” with Ricky Martin, and ending with DtMF. Overall, his halftime show focused on multiculturalism, and loving everyone no matter where their origin or nationality is or came from. At the end of the show, a message displayed on the jumbotron reading the words: “THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE”. After this, Bunny ended off his show by saying “God bless America,” listing off nations across the Americas, and playing DtMF to close out the show.
I leave with this: always love the people around you, even if you may not agree with them, as the only thing that can help solve the growing division amongst many in our nation is love. Especially during so much strife and fear in our nation at the moment, it is important to just love everyone as if they were a reflection of ourselves. As Bunny said “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”
