HBO releases House of the Dragon

With the season finale of Game of Thrones ending in 2019, many fans were left wanting much more from the show. The show began in 2011 and spent eight years developing eight seasons, the franchise immediately resurfaced with a new series, House of the Dragon. Fans can watch the show exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.

Beginning the show on August 21, House of the Dragon immediately gained popularity with approximately 10 million views for the first episode, setting a new record for HBO. As more episodes come out each week, each are estimated to have about 29 million views, making the seven episode show have around 203 million views in total and climbing. The show has reached the likes of the audience with a score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. 

The setting takes place 200 years before Game of Thrones begins and has significant time skips throughout the show that increase with each episode. The second episode begins six months after the first while the third episode has a gap of three years from the second. House of the Dragon mainly focuses on the Targaryen House and the world before the extinction of dragons. Dragons played a vital role in the shaping of the Seven Kingdoms as force was used to unite them under one ruler. Most of the show occurs in Westeros and covers the conflict between who will succeed King Viserys I Targaryen who is played by Paddy Considline. 

The last episode, “The Black Queen,” was released on October 23 and completed the first season. Before the second episode was even released, the creators of House of the Dragon announced their plans for a second season. As of now, no set date has been revealed, but fans speculate that the season may come out in 2024 as filming is set to begin in 2023.
