On February 2, K-pop supergroup TWICE released “I GOT YOU” to streaming platforms. The long-awaited track is the pre-release for their upcoming 13th mini album WITH YOU-TH which is set to release on February 23.
For context, a pre-release track is a song off an artist’s upcoming album released ahead of time to build excitement for their return to the music industry. In Korean pop music, releases like these are commonplace due to their effectiveness. Examples include: (G)I-DLE’s “Allergy,” BLACKPINK’s “PINK VENOM,” and “Soñar (Breaker)” by NMIXX.
“I GOT YOU” is the group’s second all-English pre-release track to date, following last year’s “MOONLIGHT SUNRISE” off their mini album READY TO BE. The track successfully boosted the ensemble’s popularity ahead of READY TO BE’s release and quickly became a fan-favorite. At the time of writing, “MOONLIGHT SUNRISE” is the girls’ fourth most popular song on Spotify, and has amassed over 165 million streams on the platform.
So far, “I GOT YOU” has surpassed “MOONLIGHT SUNRISE” in Spotify popularity; it is currently listed as their top song, and has accumulated 13.5 million streams. Additionally, the “I GOT YOU” CD has sold out on the band’s official online shop, and on YouTube, the music video achieved the 20 million views milestone after just 11 days.
Despite the song’s recent release, it has quickly become a beloved addition to TWICE’s discography among fans. The lyrics detail the members’ deep bond and close friendship, and their ability to rely on one another in tough times.
In the first verse, vocalist Mina sings: “When I’m walking / Into the darkness / I know you’ll be right there / Lighting up the flares.” Throughout the song, listeners are simultaneously energized and comforted by the members’ soothing vocals and the track’s vibrant production. The single’s mellow synths, soft strings, and lively beat make it a perfect listen for those eager for an early taste of spring.
“I GOT YOU” is similar to other retro-inspired TWICE songs such as “SOS” as far as composition, and also resembles the delicate vocals in “When We Were Kids.” Fans will be pleasantly surprised upon hearing the new release; the song stands out in TWICE’s discography, but still blends in seamlessly with previous releases.
“I GOT YOU” has further heightened excitement around TWICE’s new release and satisfied their desires for new music. To support TWICE, pre-order WITH YOU-TH at twiceshop.com and stream, “I GOT YOU,” available on all streaming platforms.
