The sunset may have been setting on Winter Springs, but all of the lights were coming out to shine at the Wayne Epps Stadium. The match ahead has been a long time coming. After a fall season of training with the team and a well earned pre-season win at home the previous week, the Winter Springs Girls’ Lacrosse team was more than ready to jump into action for their long awaited first official game of the 2025 season.
Their preseason match against the Wolverines was truly a win to work for on all sides of the ball. The Bears’ fought tooth and nail to get the lead on the scoreboard each quarter and end 10-7. The match, while it didn’t count for the record, reflected well on the Bears’ accumulated hard work in the off season and built up the players’ hype knowing that they’d be going into the regular season with a win.
The girls’ first game counted toward the season’s record took place on February 10 against the rivals from Ronald Reagan Blvd, The Lyman Greyhounds. Being that the season was just beginning for Lacrosse teams all over the county, the Bears would host the Greyhounds very first match of the season, and hand them their first loss in the process. The Monday Night Lights game started just at sunset with a beautiful view from the stadium. However, nothing matched the view of the Bears’ dominating against their opponents on their home field.
The Greyhounds won the draw, running the ball all the way down to their attacking side in the blink of an eye. With more than a couple passes they attempted to run in for goal, when they were met with the Bears’ fiery defense and forced a caused turnover in their favor. The ball was quickly passed up field to the Bears’ offense and resulted in a quick goal. The Bears’ offense continued to take advantage of the Greyhounds’ weaknesses on defense and the great number of 50/50 ground balls. The Defensive gameplay became quite feisty from the Greyhounds as they began to wrack up multiple cards for slashing and pushing due to their inexperience. While the Greyhounds top scorer on midfield managed to weasel out 3 goals, the bears kept their dreams of winning at Winter Springs just that, a dream. The Bears’ offense put up 15 goals to their three and ended the match with another win on the books.
