Winter Springs High School honored those who are currently serving in the US military through an assembly on Veteran’s Day. Students headed to the gymnasium before their first period to celebrate the men and women who make up the US military, some of whom work at WSHS. Principal Pete Gaffney explained the significance of this event.
“Ever since I began to be a principal back even when I started elementary school, I thought it was incredibly important for all of us to stop and pause at least once a year to recognize and celebrate the veterans and all they’ve done for our country.”
To start off the assembly, the WSHS JROTC presented the Colors followed by “The National Anthem” sung by the Chorus program. Moving and patriotic performances were made by the Band of Gold, Gospel Choir, the ASL program, the Step Team. Ocky Clark, who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan spoke at the event.
Many veterans who reside in Winter Springs were in attendance. Principal Gaffney “received positive feedback. People just appreciate the time and effort that anyone puts into recognizing their hard work and commitment to our country.”
This is the second year that WSHS has honored the veterans in their community. After the students left, a reception in the Grizzly Grill was held for those present. With the help of the JROTC and Culinary classes, the veterans received special treatment as they mingled with others.
A reception followed the assembly to further recognize the veterans and active military personnel of the Winter Springs community.
Throughout the day, WSHS continued to recognize those who have and are currently serving in the military by participating in the Keeth Elementary Veteran’s Day Celebration, The Altamonte Police Department Veteran’s Day Event, and the City of Winter Springs Veteran’s Day Tribute.
The following WSHS teachers and staff are veterans; Joe Cummiskey, Octavius Clark, Clayton Corey, Brian Black, Frederick Ramie, Erik Dye, Cynthia Urena, Lisa May, Jeff Schaefer, Dave Thompson, and Jim Wix.
