Mr. Parker– an AP (Advanced Placement) English teacher at Winter Springs High School- has dedicated his life to his career. At Winter Springs High School, he teaches a variety of classes, including AP Seminar, AP Literature, and coaches students for college applications. Into a look of the daily life of his classroom, Mr. Parker commences his classes by introducing a short story and giving the class two options- have him read the article or read the story by themselves.
After the story is read, Mr. Parker engages with the class by asking contemplative questions such as: “Is suffering a necessary part of life?”, “Does evil exist without good?, and “What is too much control?” After student’s share their responses, Mr. Parker expresses his own opinions; in other words, he elaborates the overall meaning of the work. In the short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. LeGuin, he discusses how the story poses the question whether the suffering of one person is worth the prosperity of an entire community. Ending the class, he assigns an assignment such as a Lit journal or another short story to read.
Turning to his goals as a teacher, his motto is the following: “Do not be afraid to ask your teachers for help; we want you to succeed.” Furthermore, he believes that it’s human to make mistakes, “some students are so afraid of being bad at their subject, that they forget it’s the first step to being good at that same subject. I do some of my best teaching one-on-one, so I always encourage students to get used to the idea of learning by conferencing rather than a full class lecture or activity.”
