Hurricane Milton hit Florida as a category three storm, spurring school closures through October 9th to October 12th. Fortunately, WSHS acted as a shelter for those in mobile homes and disabled people. This was done by the Seminole County Shelter Operations with Elementary, Middle, and High School team, which provided a safe haven for those in need.
Despite this aid, Hurricane Milton still brought destruction to neighboring buildings. In Orange County, the first floor of the Fish memorial hospital was flooded with water. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported. However, the local area of Tampa received more damage. Hurricane Milton reached Tampa with winds of 101 miles per hour with Tropic Field being the shelter for thousands of emergency responders. Unfortunately, the Tropic Field’s roof was ripped off the stadium;luckily, no one was injured. In total, fourteen deaths have been reported because of Hurricane Milton.
All in all, WSHS acted as a sanctuary for those in need.
