On August 13, pop star Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears stepped down as the head of her conservatorship after heavy public scrutiny and a heartfelt testimony by Spears herself. The conservatorship that Spears was assigned started about 13 years ago when Spears was at the center of a major public breakdown. This breakdown followed her split from husband rapper Kevin Fenderline. No one entirely knows why she had said breakdown, but one can speculate her divorce had something to do with it.

Spears is shown first getting bombarded with paparazzi in her own vehicle. The video cuts off to show the car that Spears attacked with an umbrella. This sparked her to lose custody of her children. There was one instance where Spears locked herself in a room with her own child and was forced out. After that, came the conservatorship.

James Spears, her father, became her conservator. Dictionary.com defines conservatorship as, “An agreement or order under which one person or entity controls the personal and financial affairs of another.”

Fans had speculated Spears’ conservatorship was not in her best interest but for the financial gain of her father.  This began something called the #FreeBritney movement. Although, it truly started with FreeBritney.net which launched in 2009 and has been fighting for Spears’ freedom ever since.

Spears, as mentioned previously, had given testimony against her father. In the testimony Spears stated that she was forced to perform, forced to drink, and not allowed to have more children. She stated her father more or less controlled every aspect of her life. Spears even goes as far as wanting to sue her family and charge her father with conservatorship abuse.

Spears stated, “My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship … they should be in jail.”

In the next few weeks Spears’ case will continue to unfold, and hopefully she will get the justice she deserves.
