Justin Bieber releases controversial song “The Ghost of You”

As many may know, Selena Gomez and Justin \Bieber had a fling during the beginning of 2011. After many years of reconciliations between the two, they finally broke things off publicly on November 26, 2019. Many speculations noticed that a month or so prior to the break-up, Gomez made a song by the name of “Lose you to love me.” She then admitted that the song was about Bieber moving on two months after they broke up. This was her way of closure with the whole situation.

Back in 2010 Gomez released the song “Ghost of you.” The song alludes to missing someone after losing them, in a relationship type of way. She says “Wear your memory like a stain, can’t erase or numb the pain, here to stay with me forever,” and it is about always having love for Bieber. Hailey Baldwin and Bieber got engaged in 2018 and officially announced marriage in 2019. They have had some difficulties “blending lives together” said Bieber, but in the end figured things out. Gomez never responded to this initial marriage.

Bieber came out with his sixth album Justice on March 13. Although the album consisted of 10 songs, specifically the one named “Ghost” stood out to everyone. As mentioned prior Gomez made her song in early 2010 about missing someone you loved after losing them. Inside of Bieber’s song he says, “I’ll settle for the ghost of you, I miss you more than life.” Many people speculated that this song was written for Gomez.  There are very major similarities between the songs, but it also could just be a coincidence.

Bieber had an interview with British Vogue and said, “It’s about losing somebody you love.” He includes that during these Corona times everyone needs to just cherish the memories before it’s too late. Many fans find this hard to believe and continue to tweet towards Gomez about the situation. One lyric reads “Your memory is ecstasy,” which is something you don’t necessarily say about your loved one/family passing. It’s a term used rather for a significant other. Gomez has yet to comment on the song. Also most of his album Justice was dedicated to his current wife Hailey, so it’s hard to not believe Bieber that his songs were for his wife and family.
