Is Lebron James going to sit out upcoming basketball games?
January 25, 2016
Lebron James, forward on the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been called out by Tariq Toure, a Baltimore journalist, to sit out upcoming NBA basketball games in response to the grand jury’s decision not to charge Cleveland police officers in the November 2014 shooting of Tamir Rice.
On November 22nd, 2014, Rice, 12 years old at the time, was in a park playing with a toy gun, and when officers approached him after a 911 call, Rice was shot and killed by the two police officers. The case instigated a protest involving the Black Lives Matter movement, which is an effort started in 2013 that campaigns for equality among racial relations in America’s judicial system.
The hashtag ‘#NoJusticeNoLebron’ was started on Twitter by Toure to begin advocating for the sit-out he wishes to take place. James has not commented on the discussion as of yet, but Toure told Newsweek that he isn’t deterred. “He’s Lebron James. I couldn’t imagine him reaching out to me.” He also continues to say, “Nevertheless, it was good to get conversation started, whether people were for it or opposed to it. It shows the gravity of having someone like him do that kind of protest. It really ruffled feathers.”
Tamir Rice’s mother, Samaria Rice, has commented on the situation, saying “I think it’s quite sad that LeBron hasn’t spoken out about my son. I’m not asking him to sit out a game. I know his kids got to eat too, but you can at least put on a shirt or something.”
In the past, James has spoken up about recent racial controversies; for example, he wore an “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt during warm-ups before a game in December of 2014, showing support for Eric Garner who died at the hands of a New York Police Department officer. Advocates behind the Black Lives Matter campaign believe that the more attention brought to the situation, the better, and having a world-renowned athlete stand up for the cause would create a great platform for others to hop onto as well.
This movement has obviously met a good amount of controversy, and while some say that Lebron disregarding all of the media about this topic is appalling, others say that it is unfair to put all the pressure only on James to stand up for the injustice, instead of the rest of the Cleveland basketball team. There are also many who disagree that Rice’s case was an “injustice” and believe that those police officers had simply been trying to defend themselves from what they saw as a threat.
No matter where one stands, this call of action to Lebron James has a profound effect on the world. It has given the opportunity for some to stand up for a cause they believe in, and others to share their opinion on what they believe is an exaggerated injustice, whether Lebron ends up commenting on it or not.
