With the nation on the edge of its seat on November 5, votes were tallied up and viewers around America tuned in to witness the 2024 election. The map of the United States was painted red that night, and Donald Trump became the president-elect of 2024, with JD Vance as his vice president.
Trump had originally started the presidential race with Joe Biden as his opponent; however, in July of this year, the president announced his withdrawal as a candidate, and Kamala Harris took his place, with Tim Walz as her vice presidential candidate.
Winning over 50% of the votes, Trump scored the popular vote, despite many election polls predicting otherwise. The president-elect will return to the White House for his second term, a surprising comeback considering the events of the past four years since he lost to former candidate Joe Biden.
Harris, who would have been the first female president of the United States, won 47.7% of all votes, making Trump’s win very close. She gained the support of states such as California, New York, Virginia, and New Mexico. Trump won Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.
The president-elect has already started to select his new administration. He recently announced his campaign manager Susie Wiles will become his White House Chief of Staff, making her the first woman to ever hold the position. Trump has also made many promises about his plans when he takes office, including cutting climate regulations, ending the Ukraine war “within 24 hours,” and deporting undocumented immigrants. He has also stated that there will be no abortion ban set in place.
Just a little while after her defeat was made public, Vice President Harris gave her concession speech at Howard University. Standing before a crowd of disappointed Democrats, Harris urged them to “never give up.” She stated that “the light of America’s promise will always burn bright.”
Harris delivered an encouraging speech to the people before her. She asserted that she was not done with the sentiments and ideas that she had campaigned for. The Vice President said, “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fuelled this campaign.”
As the fight has come to a close, Americans are anticipating the changes to come. With the presidency now in Republican hands, Donald Trump’s second term is one that will certainly change the way America has functioned in the past four years.
