On the night of January 23, students and staff of Winter Springs High School represented various clubs and programs around campus at a curriculum night for incoming freshmen. The event lasted from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., and gave incoming students the chance to tour the campus, meet administrators, sign up for clubs, and more!
Student services and administration began the night with a presentation to the incoming freshmen and informed them of various things to expect and be aware of when coming to Winter Springs. They answered some questions from the audience and did their best to help prepare the attendees for a smooth transition to high school.
Student services had a table where parents and their children could connect with counselors and ask more in-depth questions if they needed, as well as get more information on what Winter Springs has to offer. Other programs such as IB and the AP Capstone program had representatives like Dr. Vickers and Ms. Gaskill to share their program’s specialties with students who are interested in advanced pathways for their education.
A variety of clubs attended the event and had various things to display. The culinary program demonstrated their amazing cooking skills by making buffalo tortellini in a Tuscan sauce, as well as rice crispy treats. Both of these were handed out to attendees at the event and not only tasted great but filled the venue with the aroma of their pasta as they cooked it firsthand for their audience.
Renewable Energy Honors Society (REHS) had a variety of devices out to demonstrate and show to those who were interested. All of the program clubs had representatives who were happy to answer questions and show off the interesting activities each group did.
Competitive groups such as Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and Distributive Education Clubs of America, or DECA, were able to show the many opportunities students have to compete in high-level academic competitions. Alongside them, groups like the Honeybears and Athletics were able to show off their awards for the athletic achievements received by the school.
WSHS further encouraged incoming freshmen to learn about the school by doing an in-school presentation and tour. This event included demonstrations by clubs such as JROTC, Chorus, ASL, Jazz Band, Gospel Choir, and more. Groups of students led tours around the school giving the middle schoolers a chance to get acquainted with their future campus and to learn about the many things that the school has to offer. Over 300 future bears were in attendance at this event and had an amazing chance to learn about their future and possible paths they could take. As the second semester continues moving forward, preparations for the next school year will continue and for the many new opportunities for the incoming freshmen.
