Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy video game casts its spell
February 7, 2022
The British book, film, and video game series Harry Potter has made quite the name for itself since its debut with J.K. Rowling’s fantasy novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on June 26, 1997. Currently, the franchise has grossed over $7.7 billion from eight films and sold over 500 million copies of the seven original books worldwide. Fans, or Potterheads, everywhere were ecstatic when a short teaser trailer was recently released for the series’ latest video game, Hogwarts Legacy, which was originally intended for release in 2021 but was delayed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So far, the game’s developer, Avalanche Software, hasn’t revealed too much in terms of gameplay and storyline, although they have confirmed that it will release on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Series S, Series X, and Playstation 4 and 5. In terms of the game itself, it will be an open-world action RPG, take place in the nineteenth century, and have an original storyline and morality system. Additionally, players will be able to customize their playable characters, choose their house, and explore beyond Hogwarts. The company also noted that J.K. Rowling will not be involved in the development of the game.
According to the American entertainment website Screen Rant, “Players will be able to learn magical spells, interact with magical beasts and also brew potions.” The site also joked that “perhaps the game will give the freedom to be the nicest wizard in training at Hogwarts or if they choose to be, a complete Draco Malfoy.” On their website, the team at Avalanche Software stated “Players will also encounter missions and scenarios that will pose difficult choices and determine what they stand for.”
Except for what the developers of Hogwarts Legacy have revealed so far, many details of the game remain shrouded in mystery, including the exact release date, despite Warner Bros’ revelation that it will release in late September. It’s certain that upon the game’s release, many Potterheads around the world will set off on their journeys as witches and wizards and create their own legacies.
