Soul is a new Disney movie, so far only on Disney+. It was released December 25, 2020. The director Pete Docter is well known for his work. He also directed Inside Out, and Up, and is an academy award winner. This film is about living life to the fullest and finding one’s purpose. The main character, Joe, is a middle school band teacher. He wants to be a Jazz musician, but every time he scores an audition or callback, he gets declined. Joe finally gets invited to play on stage with a popular band. They loved the way he played piano and wanted him to perform with them. Joe finally gets what he has been waiting for, when something life changing happens. He dies. Fortunately, dying forced Joe to finally open his eyes, and learn how to live. He sees his life from another perspective and tries to make a change for the better.

 The scenes where Joe looks at his life from another perspective, and realizes how meaningless his life actually was, were brilliant. The animation in this scene was perfect, it was sad, the colors clashed well, it was easy to understand, and it opened up the person’s eyes. Also, towards the end, there were clips of when Joe did enjoy life. When he really stopped and appreciated living. Those scenes were made to look like flashbacks. They created an urge for the person watching to do something exciting. Change it up a little bit. 

This movie really opens up the eyes. Life is worth living. Make the most out of it because you only live once. This movie portrays life in a beautiful and relatable way, not making it sound any better or worse than it actually is. One of the many lessons taught in this film is that everyone has a purpose, and that it’s okay to not know what that purpose is yet. The point of life isn’t to find your purpose, it’s to enjoy every second of living. Find a purpose on the way, but don’t let it distract you from living right. 

“Take a risk. Have fun.” Those words often get thrown around, but this movie gives them meaning. It shows a different perspective on what life should be like, and makes the person watching rethink the decisions they have made, and want to be better. This movie is seriously worth watching. It could change the way life is looked at. 

Not to mention, the animation is phenomenal. The way the “Souls” were presented was adorable and easy to comprehend. The animation is so creative and fun, and the colors were beautiful and clashed well with the animation style used. The movie is very funny, but it’s also a bit of a tearjerker. This movie is very recommended, it will change the watchers views, and perspective about life.
