The Winter Springs High School Boys Volleyball program prepares for the upcoming season.  The head coach, Nikki Vapors, is seeking strong and knowledgeable players, who know how to work as a team.

The coaches want to create a strong foundation for the team this year. They are looking for athletes who understand the fundamentals of volleyball.

“We are looking to solidify our passing game, developing more setters for the program, and grasp the full importance of a defensively sound program.” Coach Vapors said.

If you are new to volleyball though, there is no reason to worry.  There are many other important factors the coaches consider when looking for suitable athletes. While possessing prior volleyball skills and knowledge is beneficial, it is also extremely important to have a good attitude and mindset. The skills can always be taught but being a coachable athlete is not something the coaches can force on you. One of the most important non-coachable skills they are looking for is teamwork. Volleyball is a team sport without your teammates there is no game.

“With volleyball, multiple people are involved in every play. The attack depends on the set. The set depends on the quality of the pass. Each play, each point, each set, each match depends on the ability of great players to compete as one functioning unit. If one player is off, just like one part of an engine breaks, the entire machine breaks down,” said Vapors.

Coach Vapors believes a truly successful team must be unified.

“So, team unity is crucial.  Team bonding is vital.  Strong mental mindset is key in this sport.  Knowing how to get your teammates to be their best is a leadership quality I am always on the hunt for in my athletes.”

While you may want to try out for the volleyball team because you think it sounds fun, Coach Vapors also wants you to understand that hard work and dedication are vital to a successful volleyball season. You will have lots of tough practices consisting of hard work and drills before you get to play hard and have fun.

The dates and times will be announced by Wednesday, January 16.
