Grammy Awards: The Good and the Bad
March 7, 2016
Now that the end of February is approaching, award show season is upon us. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards were on February 14th, 2016 and the 58th Annual Grammy Awards were recently held on February 15th, 2016.
The red carpet was filled with many celebrities along with the occasional out-of-the-box fashion choice. Lady Gaga stunned the crowd with her David Bowie tribute complete with sky-high ruby red heels and bright red-orange hair to match, as well as bright cobalt blue embellished dress.
For all musicians in the industry, the Grammy Awards is their chance to spend hundreds of dollars on an outfit to show off to the world. Most of the time critics take time out of their day to judge them and rank them for best and worst dressed.
The best dressed women were definitely Ellie Goulding, Tori Kelly and Diana Gloster. Nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance, Ellie Goulding wore a custom Stella McCartney floor-length soft pink slip style dress with silver hardware draping the back. It was very elegant, and the silver chains gave a nice twist on the classic look. The satin gold pumps also added a nice touch that went very well with her nude makeup and textured hair.
Next up was Tori Kelly who was nominated for Best New Artist. She went with a glamorous look starting off with the 1920’s style curled hair. The jewelry she wore was soft pink, to match her makeup and complemented her Gauri and Nainika emerald green gown very nicely.
Diana Gloster chose a dress that definitely made a statement. It was a white strapless dress by Tarik Ediz with a black waistband and to simply put it, a symphony printed on to the skirt; very appropriate for the Grammy’s a music award show. She gave the ensemble a pop of color with a red lip which really pulled the outfit together.
The best dressed men, were Common, Sam Smith, and James Bay. All of these men were very classy, and put together. And of course, the most important feature in a man’s tuxedo is to make sure it is properly tailored, and all of the best dressed men certainly had that.
Common who won Best Song Written for Visual Media along with John Legend for his songwriting in “Glory,” wore a Dolce & Gabbana. The polka dot dress shirt added a nice unique touch without being overbearing. It was well-cut and suited the singer very well.
Sam Smith wore a very flattering navy suit with a grey tie that complemented each other very nicely. This year, he did have a beard that was neat and well-cut just like the suit.
Now on to the worst dressed. These people have horribly failed and attempting to wear something new or “unique.”
First up in the worst dressed women is Dencia. She came to a red carpet event with a bubblegum pink onesie quite similar to my one year old baby cousin’s. Not only that, but it seemed as if the material was Velcro considering there were four Hello-Kitty stuffed animals stuck to her legs, as well as two in her hair. For her jewelry, she unfortunately decided to go with what looked like pearl headphones and hot pink cate-eye glasses. To try and dress it up there were a few bejeweled Chanel logos stuck on. As for the horror that were her shoes, it looked like an elementary school project using seashells and rainbow beads. This so called outfit definitely made a statement, and hopefully Dencia won’t wear pajamas to the next Grammy Awards.
Second, for worst dressed women is country singer nominee Ashley Monroe. She arrived with a teal blue floor-length dress that would have been beautiful, but with a key hole in the front of the dress, the look was unfortunately ruined.
Manika arrived wearing a barely-there figure-skater dress. In fact, wearing a figure skater dress would have been more appropriate. The skirt had a high-low design which is so 2011. Although her makeup and hair was nice, the dress however was, with all due respect, horrific. She decided to wear sparkly ankle boots with a red heel that blended perfectly with the red carpet. What I want to know is how she sat down during the actual show.
As for worst dressed men, Wiz Khalifa, Cedric Burnside, and Brian Head Welch, definitely make the list.
Wiz Khalifa definitely has his own certain style, but this “bull rider” look topped all of his worst looks. Also, may I just say, if he is wearing sunglasses to shield the photographers’ flash, he doesn’t have to worry about it because he wasn’t worth taking a photo of. Not only the sunglasses, but he also wore white converse, which are very stylish, but not on a red carpet.
Next up, Cedric Burnside who was nominated for Best Blues Album. He wore a beige suit, with pin stripe linen pants, which made him look like the “Boy with the Striped Pajamas.”
Lastly, Brian Head Welch similar to Khalifa wore black converse that are simply not appropriate for a red carpet event. Also, he wore a suit that just wasn’t tailored well.
All in all, the Grammy Awards was very entertaining and all the winners deserved the awards they received.
