Gospel Choir students practicing for Gospel Extravaganza.

As stated in previous articles, club participation and extracurriculars are highly valued in the college admission process. Colleges can recognize that a student can balance school and other activities as well as a want for outside enrichment. Winter Springs High School has over 50 student-run associations and clubs for students to thrive in. The Gospel Choir is just one of the very many clubs that exist within the community here at school.

Schowonda Williams, the director of the class says, “[Gospel Choir] provides an opportunity for students to participate in a choral program. This class opens another avenue for students who wouldn’t normally be in a chorus program.”

The Gospel Choir, was introduced at the start of the 2018 school year and has accomplished many things. On January 31st, the WSHS Gospel Choir will be putting on the ‘Gospel Extravaganza’ which will be filled with “singing, dancing, and laughter.” Students and groups from all over Seminole and Orange counties are expected to attend and put on a dynamic show.

Other events that the Gospel Choir will be participating in are the Gospel Explosion (2/9 @LHHS) as well as the WSHS Black History Month program with Young Women of Excellence (2/22 in WSHS Auditorium).

Ms. Williams said that the group is very energetic and lively. Drawing from the rhythmic and highly-spirit African American sacred music tradition, the Gospel Choir adds diversity to our choral program here at WSHS.

When asked about the benefits of Gospel Choir, Williams had this to say:

“Gospel Choir pulls a variety of cultural students together to sing praises.”

When considering joining this “tight-knit group”, Ms. Williams does not expect anyone to be a natural vocalist.

“A lot of the kids who are in the class right now, do not have a choral background or voice training. This is a beginner’s course and all are welcome. However, next year we are looking to hold auditions to join the class.”
