Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the newest addition to J.K Rowling’s exciting, mythical book series that was seemingly finished when The Deathly Hallows was released in 2007. A follow up to the original story 19 years later, this fantastical novel follows Harry’s son, Albus, and the daring situations he gets into with his friends, while also battling the ideas of never living up to his father’s potential. Presenting many old characters, as well as fresh perspectives in the newer characters, Rowling and her counterparts created a hilarious, engaging, and theatrical script story.

The book is very fan serviced, take that as you will, and incorporates a lot of references to the older books. It’s filled with humor that a lot of old school Potterheads (fans of the book series) will understand, but if someone knows the general gist of what Harry Potter is without technically reading the stories, they’ll be able to follow the story quite well.

thing that makes this novel different from the rest is that it relies heavily on time-travel to advance the plot and tell the story. The Cursed Child is packed with these sort of original elements to make it fun to read, have you on the edge of your seat, and flipping pages quickly.

With it not actually being an 8th book, but a script to the Cursed Child play that will be shown in various place in the UK, many people didn’t know what they were getting into when they snatched this story off the bookshelves and wasted no time to bury their noses in the pages. It’s more of a word for word reincarnation of the show itself, unlike the previous books that were written in narrative form. This doesn’t mean the novel is poorly written or a bad read because actually, it’s quite the opposite. J.K Rowling still did an impeccable job conveying emotion through the text and characters, and the scripted type allows the novel to be an easy read. Fans all over the world fled to bookstores the moment this novel was out.

Our own Sophomore Bear, Courtney Billards, says “I haven’t read all of it, but so far the book is great! I really like the characters and the plotline.”

As you can see, this book is a top hit. But some people would beg to differ.

Ella McIver says “I didn’t really like the book. It was anticlimactic and the characters were written differently than earlier books.”

Other critics of the writing say, with this scripted format, the book was too short and confusing to follow.

Even so, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a great new novel that can be enjoyed by any book lover. It’s a noble addition to a beloved series that is recommended to the masses in the highest degree. So take out your plastic wands, put on your sorting hat, and get ready to get into a heated discussion about which Hogwarts House is the best, because Harry Potter is back, and everyone should be a part of it.
