The Winter Springs High School golf team may not be the first sports team students think of on campus, but their season has been well under way since the beginning of the school year. Both the boys and girls teams have played quite a few games so far this year and are determined to continue improving throughout the season.

For some sports on campus, it is hard to make the team if a student has no prior experience; however, the golf team gives students of all skill levels the opportunity to learn and play the sport.

Coach Ciero, the golf coach at WSHS, said that both the boys and girls teams have “quite a few inexperienced players, especially the boys.”

The girls team has started out the year strong with a record of four wins and two losses. Coach Ciero stated that junior Courtney Qiu is the top golfer on the girls team with an average of 37 strokes.  The girls’ most recent match against Lake Brantley ended with a win of 112-120. Against Lyman, they won by a large margin of 215-250 and lost by just a few strokes to Hagerty with 215-207.

The record for the boys team has started out a bit rocky with two wins and five losses, but the team is confident they will continue to improve. They recently won against Lake Howell with a score of 198-201, and lost by just one stroke to Lake Brantley with the score ending up at 174-173. The top golfer on the boys team is senior Thomas Brasco, who has an average of 36 strokes. 36 is par, meaning on average, he takes no extra strokes than necessary to complete each hole.

Junior Christine Cassen just joined the golf team this year with no prior experience. At first, she was “concerned she wouldn’t know how to do anything,” but her skills quickly improved with the help of her teammates and Coach Ciero. Now, Cassen describes being on the team as “a par-tee.”

The golf season for both boys and girls has a little less than a month to go, ending with a state tournament on October 26th, 2016.
